Neurodivergence-Focused Well-Being
Better space, better life.
Individuals living with autism, ADHD, and OCD often have unique sensory and physical needs – needs which can only be met through the proper environment.
Whether you are a business looking to make a welcoming space for your clients or simply redesigning your bedroom for yourself or your child, we will work with you to ensure that your space provides exactly what you need from it.
The What
The environmental needs of neurodivergent people are complex and individual. We all benefit from the same basic elements of restorative environments, but those of us living with autism, ADHD, and OCD must navigate additional needs that our neurotypical peers do not. To make an environment truly fit for us demands extra attention during the design process.
This attention is doubly necessary because of how varied these conditions can be: one person with OCD is compulsed to touch doorknobs, while another fears contamination in any material with too many crevasses; one person with ADHD seeks sound to calm them down, another needs space to move. Thoughtful design turns a space into an oasis where it is easier to focus, navigate, find joy, and live in peace, while reducing instances of sensory overload, internal distraction, and compulsive triggers. Even a commercial or public space can be made inclusive and comfortable for a far wider audience through early consideration in the design process.
At GloWing Design, our goal is to help our neurodivergent community thrive. We know that there is far more to thriving for neurodivergent people than to simply help us act more like neurotypical people; thriving means that we can act more like ourselves, in safety, comfort, and joy.
Important Note:
Restorative environmental design provides health benefits primarily through reducing stress. While this can have significant positive impacts in both mental and physical wellness, it is no replacement for proper regimens of medicine and therapy. Our consultations are not medical advice. Seek help from a trained medical professional for serious concerns.
The Why
People who live with Autism, ADHD, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder – referred to collectively as “neurodivergence” - perceive and interact with the world in different ways than people who do not live with these conditions. The world does not often consider the unique needs of our community and our conditions, which can make our lives far more difficult than they need to be: a lively city becomes an overwhelming barrage of noise, a comfortable chair is made unusable by its texture, a complicated floor pattern transforms into an un-navigable maze.
By simply considering our needs during the design process and implementing the proper solutions, our neurodivergent community can thrive in the wider world.
The Where
Any space can be made better for our neurodivergent community, from private residences to public schools and everything in between.
